Matteo Trevisan: We are still dreaming

Mit dieser Ausstellung beginnen wir unser Jahresprogamm 2026, in dem wir uns mit politischen Räumen befassen.
We are still dreaming“ ist eine visuelle Recherche zu der Community von unter 30-jährigen, die im Susatal leben, einem der wildesten Alpentäler Italiens. Dieses Gebiet hält den Rekord als die am stärksten militarisierte Zone des Landes und als Schauplatz der längsten Protestbewegung, die Italien je gesehen hat: die No-Tav-Bewegung.
„Was bedeutet es, ein Leben zu führen, das einen dazu zwingt, ständig die Güte der Institutionen seines Landes in Frage zu stellen, und das einen dazu bringt, die Personen, die einen eigentlich schützen sollten, als Bedrohung für die eigene Freiheit zu betrachten?
Die No-Tav-Bewegung, die Anfang der 1990er Jahre entstand, hat sich zum Ziel gesetzt, den Bau der Hochgeschwindigkeitsbahnstrecke Turin-Lyon zu verhindern, die sie als Verschwendung öffentlicher Gelder und als Schaden für das Gebiet ansieht. In über 30 Jahren Arbeit wurde nicht einmal ein Meter der geplanten 7 km langen Tunnel realisiert, die für die Züge vorgesehen sind.
Mit dem Projekt „We are still dreaming” habe ich mich entschlossen, ausgehend von Porträts und einer Sammlung ihrer Aussagen tagebuchartig die Geschichte dieser neuen Generation junger Menschen zu erzählen, die nie ein Leben ohne Kämpfe, Anzeigen, Verhaftungen und Proteste gekannt haben.“ (Matteo Trevisan)
Matteo Trevisan (1991) ist ein Fotograf und Videokünstler aus Italien. Er lebt in Padua (Veneto) und wird seit 2022 von der Agentur Contrasto vertreten. Trevisan wuchs in einer Grenzregion zwischen Italien und Slowenien auf. In Langzeitprojekten und mit einem anthropologischen Zugang zu Territorien beschäftigt er sich sozialen und ökologischen Themen. 2024 veröffentlichte er seinen ersten Bildband „I Guardiani della montagna – We are still dreaming” (Danilo Montanari Editore), der den Kämpfen junger Menschen in der NO TAV-Bewegung gewidmet ist. Der Schriftstellers Erri De Luca verfasste dazu einen Text.

Matteo Trevisan: We are still dreaming

With this exhibition we begin our 2026 annual programme, which deals with political spaces.
‘We are still dreaming’ is a visual investigation of the community of young people under 30 who live in the Susa Valley, one of the wildest Alpine valleys in Italy. This place holds the record for being the most militarised place in the country and for hosting the longest-lasting protest movement ever in Italy: the No Tav.
What does it mean to live a life that forces you to always question the goodness of your country's institutions and that leads you to consider the figures who should protect you as a threat to your freedom?
The No Tav movement, which originated in the early 1990s, aims to oppose the construction of the Turin-Lyon high-speed railway line, considered a waste of public money and harmful to the territory.
In over 30 years of work, not even one metre of the 7 km of tunnels planned – which should serve the passage of the trains – has been realised.
With the project ‘We are still dreaming’, I decided to narrate, through portraits and the collection of their testimonies in a diary, the story of this new generation of young people who have never known a life without struggles, denunciations, arrests and protests." (Matteo Trevisan)
Matteo Trevisan (1991) is a photographer and videomaker from Italy, based in Padova - Veneto, who has been represented by Contrasto agency since 2022. Born and raised in a border area between Italy and Slovenia, Trevisan develops long-term projects on social and ecological issues with an anthropological approach to the territory.
In 2024 he published his first photo book, "I Guardiani della montagna - We are still dreaming" (Danilo Montanari Editore), which explores the struggles of young people in the NO TAV movement, accompanied by a text by the writer Erri De Luca.
